BROADCAST YOUR SCHOOL TO PARENTS AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY!

ConnectED TV

A new and dynamic broadcast service to schools was successfully piloted at New Invention Infant School in Walsall. Called ConnectED TV the service allows school activities to be easily broadcast out to parental and community groups using a simple plug and go broadcast box over the internet.

ConnectED TV is a simple concept. It makes teachers, lessons, presentations, discussions and any other video content available either as live broadcast or as a video on demand. The content created can be embedded onto a designated web site page or Virtual Learning Environment so that it can be viewed by any interested 3rd party or student.  The content can either be accessed from a public website or by persons with the appropriate username and password.

At New Invention Infant School, 46 parents and grandparents viewed the assembly via their PCs on the Internet and the reaction was extremely positive.

Kate Travis, Headteacher, said that ‘we have had many parents say that seeing a live broadcast of the school and their children was amazing, grandparents who couldn’t leave home were delighted at being able to see as well, whilst Parent’s who had work commitments (but with employers permission) could watch either live or later what had happened in school. From a schools’ perspective this increases parental and community engagement which is a really important part of our development work as a school. The children are looking forward to being able to watch their own performance again via our website with their family at home, which will have the added advantage of allowing the children to evaluate their own performance. One employer commented that he would be happy for his staff to watch future performances as this meant less working time being lost than a visit to the school to watch live would have incurred.'

In the future’, Kate said, ‘we can see that we can use this for training events, presentations, more assemblies, sports events, plays and general parental communications, maybe even announcements from the school council! We can see great potential for other schools in broadcasting lessons for absent children, or to reinforce learning, the list is endless.'

Richard Healey, Birmingham East City Learning Centre Manager, who coordinated the broadcast said that ‘it was a very easy process to set up. Using the broadcast box purchased from ConnectED it was simply a matter of plugging the box into the school’s network , attaching the camera and microphone, and then switching it on. “That's it! We could have mixed the video from the camera with a video feed from a laptop or PC. Any teacher can use this with the minimum of training. You can with practice make the broadcast more sophisticated using more microphones and more cameras, but if you want a simple press and go broadcast to all solution, ConnectED TV is it”
