‘In class PSPs have assisted differentiation and at home for revision, students have focused on a task which has been endorsed by their parents. PSPs have been used in year 4 for visual literacy around the production, packaging and marketing of their own chocolate products.’ Fiona Owens, Kings Heath School
At Longwill School for the Deaf, Birmingham results have included increased motivation and autonomy and raised achievement in spelling as well as making parents feel more involved and valued as partners in their child's learning.
‘The children rate these devices, not one has been lost or broken. Home school partnership has been key to the effective use of the PSP. All parents are invited to the school for a device familiarisation. The PSP is used as a communication tool between home and school for deaf parents and as a means of developing signing skills in both hearing parents and siblings.’ Alison Carter, Deputy Head, Longwill School for the Deaf
 | RM PLC and Joyce Ness, Senior Education Consultant, Leeds: this is a ‘pathfinder' programme for Building Schools for the Future (BSF), schools include The Autism Resource Centre (ARC), which is part of the North West Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC), Allerton Grange High School and Temple Moor High School |
‘All participants shared the opinion that the use of the PSP had the immediate benefit of being a ‘known technology’. Students displayed ownership of them and the PSPs added fun and enjoyment to their learning. It was interesting that given the device’s origins the term ‘game’ was not used. All feedback recognised improvements in personal, social and subject related skills.’ Joyce Ness, BSF
Harefield Specialist Sports Academy and Paul Quinn, Deputy Head have been using PSPs for a year in two specific areas, PE and A Level ICT with web based content programmes like Yacapaca.
‘The easy way you can review video images on a frame by frame basis as practice takes place is very powerful, especially compared to the more expensive traditional video cameras, where the functionality is much less familiar and complicated than the PSP. This is particularly enhanced by the PSPs large screen and durability’. Paul Quinn, The Harefield Academy
At the Holyhead Secondary School, West Bromwich results show that the students who used the PSPs had the same or slightly better outcomes in their attainment plus the levels of engagement, enjoyment, and ownership were higher.
‘In geography the PSPs were used as a research tool. Using the video camera, students created a wide ranging glossary of images looking at Warwick. Ease of use of video both to film and interrogate allowed them to instantly refresh and engage on project work. PSPs also helped via pre prepared PowerPoint slides for extended writing, students were able to focus quickly on individual writing slides and self review effectively.’ Emily Blain, Teacher, Holyhead School The Royal Navy and Lt. Alex Smith Engineering Training Manager at HMS Collingwood, Portsmouth is using PSP to train new recruits in basic numeracy skills. This has been combined with an innovative lesson capture programme called Lecturnity to capture all its Maths lessons and make these available as videos on the Sony PSPs
